Description

This tune first appeared with its own lyrics in William Thomson's "Orpheus Caledonius", published in London in 1725. The volume constituted the first major printed collection of Scottish songs, although it is likely that the tune predates its publication by some years. In 1792 Burns used the melody to set his song "Highland Mary", a posthumous tribute to his doomed lover "Highland" Mary Campbell (c1763-1786).

This fine old Strathspey has been attributed to Dumfries fiddler John Bruce (c1720-1785). Although resident in Dumfries Bruce was described by Burns as "an honest man, though a red wud highlander." The tune has been employed twice by Burns as a setting for song lyrics; once in the eponymous "Whistle O'er the Lave O't" and as part of the Cantata "Love and Liberty" (a.k.a. "The Jolly Beggars").
